The award-winning interior design consultancy At Home is based in Cambridge, proving that you don’t have to live in London to be a top interior designer. The desirability of this company is testament to its constant innovative approach to practical design. Hugh Jamieson, head of the consultancy and Fellow of the British Interior Design Association (BIDA), talks to Mandie Davis about his current design projects.
Hugh, does working outside London limit your opportunity for design inspiration and winning clients?
Not at all. I would say that Cambridge rates pretty hotly, having changed dramatically in the last 26 years. We are now seeing lots of new apartments and some very luxurious living in the area. Cambridge isn’t far from London, and many people commute weekly, so I get to work on my clients’ town apartments as well as their
homes here.
You recently made the decision to move even further out of town to the Norfolk coast – why was that?
The BIDA is growing rapidly outside of London, and I think that’s a good thing. These days it doesn’t really matter where you are. The fantastic trade fairs and, of course, internet have given me the freedom to move – I don’t feel cut off at all. It means that I can totally relax and recharge at the weekends.
