Rated as one of the Top 25 interior designers in the UK, Chris Dezille of interior design company ‘Honky’ seems to have it all. Since the launch of his company in 2001 he has picked up a string of awards and now has the attention of the media. Here he explains what made a lad from Reading Comprehensive turn to the creative world of interior design…

So, Chris, how did your journey into the world of interior design begin?

Well, I was a rubbish football player! I didn’t ever fit in well at school. I’m left-handed, don’t like sports, not academic – I felt like a square peg in a round hole during most of my education. Luckily for me, my mother was creative and she believed that there was a field out there for me. She sent me on a vocational guidance course, which was quite unusual in those days. After a plethora of tests they came up with a list of possible careers for me. A few of them tapped into my people-skills, and some my performance or artistic side: from trolley dolly to travel rep, window dresser and interior designer. It was an Eureka moment – I felt that the world was open to me. I took a foundation course in Bracknell, which covered lots of artistic areas, started working in window dressing and evolved into interiors from there.
